What Can a Licensed Paralegal Do in Ontario?
IIn Ontario, paralegals are licensed and regulated by the Law Society of Ontario, the same governing body that regulates lawyers.
Licensed Paralegals are authorized to provide legal services within a defined scope of practice, including representation:
• In Ontario Small Claims Court
• Before the Landlord and Tenant Board
• Before administrative tribunals
• In Provincial Offences matters
• A Licensed Paralegal may also provide representation in Summary Conviction Criminal Matters. The LSO provides an extensive list of charges Paralegals can provide assistance on.
Paralegals may draft legal documents, prepare court materials, provide legal advice within their permitted scope, negotiate settlements, and represent clients at hearings and trials in the above areas.
Licensing ensures mandatory insurance coverage, adherence to a professional Code of Conduct, and ongoing continuing professional development.
